Regulations for husbands in Labor and Delivery rooms
LABOR ROOM
1. The father of the baby of any obstetrical patient may be present in the labor room with permission of the attending obstetrician in the Delivery Room charge nurse. If the father is unavailable, a significant other person may be allowed on an individual basis.
2. Once the wife has received sedation, the visitor will be required to leave and will not be permitted to return to the area.
3. The door to the Labor Room shall remain closed while the visitor is present.
DELIVERY ROOM
1. Make your intentions known to the attending obstetrician.
2. Proof of completion of a prepared childbirth course must be presented at the time of admission.
3. The father shall remain in street clothes and gown until wife is moved to Delivery Room.
4. Just before delivery, he will be directed to a room where he will change to a scrub suit.
5. The father will refrain from entering Delivery Room Suite until his wife his positioned for delivery.
6. His position in the Delivery Room will be at the side of the table near his wife's head.
7. The door to the Delivery Room shall remain closed if any other delivery is occurring the same time.
8. The mother will be allowed to carry the baby, wrapped in a warm blanket, in her arms to the Nursery. The mother will be transported on a stretcher to Recovery Room.
9. All patients shall go to Post Partum Recovery Rooms for a minimum of 1 to 2 hours. Transfer from the RR shall depend on patient condition, not a set length of time.
10. If the father of the baby is unavailable, one significant other who has completed prepared childbirth classes will be allowed to be present in the Delivery Room with the permission of the delivering obstetrician.
11. If accepted, the father or significant other agrees to follow directions of the attending obstetrician responsible for the care of his wife. If at anytime during the delivery the obstetrician feels it is necessary for this person to leave the Delivery Room, this person must comply without questions.
12. Both the patient and her labor coach must sign a Baptist Medical Center agreement to abide by the above regulations.
GUIDELINES FOR ROOMING IN
1. There shall be a physician's order on both the mother's and the baby's charts.
2. The mother may have a private room. Rooming In will be allowed in the semi private room on a space available basis.
3. The mother may have either partial or total rooming in; she is to make the choice. If partial rooming in is chosen, the baby will be cared for in the Nursery from 10 PM to 10 AM.
4. No baby will be left with the mother until he is 12 hours old and is in satisfactory condition. The baby may be brought to the mother to visit or breast-feed before 12 hours. This will coincide with the regular Nursery feeding times.
5. The baby will return to the Nursery for examinations, lab tests, and weighing. If the pediatrician so desires, he may examine the baby in the mothers room.
6. The baby may also return to the nursery if necessary for mother's care (during medical, nursing treatment, or if she does not feel well). The baby will not be returned for viewing, or so that the mother may receive visitors in or out of her room.
7. Room #4 in the Nursery shall be used to house the rooming in infant.
8. The only visitor allowed will be the husband. Neither the mother or the baby shall receive any other visitor. The husband shall gown and wash his hands. He may stay in the room during feeding times if the door is closed. He shall follow the visiting regulations of the hospital. Visiting hours end at 8 PM.
9. The baby will not be left unattended at any time.
10. There are visiting hours for all fathers regardless of rooming in 930 AM until 1030 AM; 130 PM until 230 PM, and 530 until 630 PM. they must arrive approximately 10 minutes before these hours so they may have time to wash their hands and gown.
11. Both the husband and wife must sign a Baptist Medical Center agreement to abide by the above regulations.
12. To ensure a firmer bond within the family unit, BMC allows sibling visitation. The procedure for this is as follows:
- Visitation of children under 12 shall be limited to the siblings of the infant
- The siblings will be allowed to view the infant through the nursery window only
- This visitation shall take place from 7 to 8 PM
- All children visiting shall be accompanied by a responsible adult who shall monitor their behavior
- The visitors shall use elevators 3 and 4 only
- The children will not be allowed on the postpartum floor or in the father's waiting room,
